The Basics Of Using A New Press Brake

by Isaac

Metal fabricators play a vital role in the operations of several industries. Structures in various sectors, including aviation, automobile, agriculture, and military rely on the structural integrity of fabricated metals. At the center of constructing complex metal structures; used in these industries is a press brake machine. These machine types bend metal sheets with admirable accuracy and efficiency. However, their use requires some technical knowhow. If you have a metal fabrication task that requires high-end maintenance, you should learn more about the basics of using a new press brake.

  1. Learn How It Works

Understand the basic operational principles of your machine beforehand. Learn about the mechanism used by press brake machines to generate a bending force. Whether hydraulic, manual, or electrical type, all press brakes apply a similar principle. Bend angle is achieved through bending force. The only difference is how this force is generated in different types of press brakes.

Understand how different parts of the machine work, including the control panel. Even with technical knowhow, different machine manufacturers design their press brakes differently. Checking the manual for the location of these parts and how they operate can help in avoiding accidents and costly mistakes.

  1. Understand The Calculation Method

The uniformity of the final products of a press brake is dependent on the calculations used by the operator. Understand the basic calculation principles used in determining the bending sizes and angles. During calculations, factor in variables such as the thickness of the metal sheet and the material used.

These factors, among others, will determine how your metal sheet expands and bends during fabrications under heat. Determine the bending allowance or tolerance of the metal sheet.

  1. Always Adjust For Accuracy

Each fabrication task is unique. The tasks come in different batches with specific measurements. As a precaution, always stop the machine before beginning the adjustment exercise. This will prevent any injuries caused by the moving parts while also increasing the accuracy of the adjustments.

Begin by adjusting the tensioning wheel before bending the workpiece accordingly to adjust the X and Y axes. For computerized press brakes, you can easily adjust and correct the axes from the controller.

  1. Replace Your Filter Element And Hydraulic Oil

As recommended, the standard practice, filter elements should be replaced twice a year or as frequently as the need may arise. Always ensure that the machine is switched off before replacing the filter elements. After disassembling and replacing the filter elements, turn on the engine and the oil pump motor for one hour. This will maximize oil filtration before normal machine function resumes. Hydraulic oil is replaced by opening the shutoff valve after switching off the machine and refiling the tank with new oil.

Take-Home

Press brakes are highly sensitive machines. Any slight changes in the alignment of any part can lead to significant errors in the final product. Therefore, familiarize yourself with the basics of its operational principles to avoid such mistakes. Some of the errors can be avoided by routinely maintaining, inspecting, and appropriately readjusting the machine after task completion.
