What to consider when buying LED Downlights

by Isaac

The importance of good lighting in any home is common knowledge. Different forms of lights can be used in homes. One of the several kinds is a downlight. A downlight is a light that has been dipped into a ceiling so that it throws light downwards in the form of a narrow beam. The light that comes out of a downlight looks as if the roof is producing light from the inside. Thus, to support installation inside the ceiling, downlights are housed before being placed in the ceiling. There are different types of downlights, but the popular kind is an LED spotlight. But note,  LED downlights are the most common in the market recently.

In this post, we discuss the factors to consider when choosing LED downlights.

  1. Color of the beams

The most common Led downlight color is yellow. This color is suitable for any area in the house or an office. However, LED downlight bulbs type come in a variety of colors to choose from. Before selecting the color, you have to consider the area where the light is to get installed. Calm colors like blue are most suitable for commercial spaces as they are brighter than the later. However, for residential purposes, bright colors are more appropriate.

  1. Size

Downlights range from two inches up to eight inches in diameter. A six-inch diameter downlight is always the best option as it can be used for a variety of purposes and in different spaces. The size of the ceiling also determines the size of the downlight you should consider. Rooms with higher ceilings tend to require more light output; hence would benefit from a larger downlight or more. Smaller sized downlights tend to be more inconspicuous hence more suitable. However, the latest LED downlights are more modest and produce a lot of light.

  1. Quality and value

The standard LED downlights, as well as the excellent quality brands, tend to have aluminum heat sinks and frames as well. These features help with efficiency in diffusing the heat that is generated when the light is in use. On the other hand, LED downlights made of plastic are less reliable. Quality downlights, therefore, have diffusers, heat sinks made of aluminum and frames. These kinds of LED downlights are, however, more costly than lesser qualities.

  1. Insulation contact

This can be determined from the IC rating of the LED downlight. The IC rating will help you determine whether or not the lighting can be installed in your building. Thus, never assume this concern; why buy something will to of use to you by just assuming one factor?

  1. Regression

This is the determinant of how recessed the downlight will be when a fixture is fully recessed; it means that the source of light is installed high into the ceiling hence less visible. Costly downlights tend to be more regressed than the cheaper versions.

Final word

Installing LED downlights is not a hard task. While installing the downlight for the first time, all you have to do is to install the housing using hanging bars secured to the frame of the ceiling or suspended on the grid of the ceiling. The next step would be to wire the fixture to a junction box and put it in the trim.
